It started with a gift for clients

In 1939, Joe Gerber, who ran an advertising agency in Portland, Oregon, asked local blacksmith David Murphy to make a batch of knives as holiday gifts for clients. Recipients wanted to buy more, so Joe turned the agency into a tool company – and Gerber was born. His sons Pete and Ham later joined and grew it from a small Portland brand into a name outdoor people know worldwide.

1. 1939Joe Gerber and blacksmith David Murphy make the first Gerber pieces; the company is founded in Portland.
2. 1966A new factory opens; multi-tools and everyday tools are still designed and made at the same site today.
3. 1980The lightweight LST folding knife launches, opening up the everyday-carry (EDC) tool category.
4. 1987Gerber joins Finland's Fiskars Group; headquarters and design stay in Portland.
5. 1992The first Multi-Plier multi-tool goes on sale – the start of Gerber's multi-tool line.
6. 2024The ComplEAT camp kitchen line launches: stainless cookware, cutting boards and cutlery, making outdoor cooking part of the toolkit.

Gerber has always made tools that solve problems – in the mountains, by the river or for repairs at home, ready when you need them.

Gerber and Fiskars: one family

Fiskars was founded in 1649 in the village of Fiskars, Finland, and is one of the oldest companies in the world; its orange-handled scissors from 1967 are still a household classic. Gerber joined Fiskars Group in 1987, so both brands belong to the same group: Gerber focuses on outdoor tools, Fiskars on kitchen, garden and household tools.
